United do not expect Greenwood will have to undergo a period of quarantine as he heads back to Manchester.

Manchester United and Manchester City have expressed their disappointment in both Mason Greenwood and Phil Foden respectively.

However, a decision will be made in due course as to when he can return to training.

The Red Devils have said: “Manchester United are liaising with the Football Association and are disappointed with the actions of Mason Greenwood ver this situation.”

But it now remains to be seen when the forward will feature for United in the Premier League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would have been ready to potentially use teenager Greenwood from the off for the new season.

City’s statement on Foden, meanwhile, was far stronger and they are clearly unimpressed with the player’s behaviour.

“His behaviour not only directly contravenes strict guidelines related to Covid-19, but also falls well below the standard expected of a Manchester City player and England international.

Their assessment of the incident reads: “It is clear that Phil’s actions were totally inappropriate.

“The club supports the FA regarding this incident, and officials from the club are now in touch in relation to Phil’s enforced early return to the UK.”
