5 soldiers killed in northwestern Pakistan: officials

ISLAMABAD, Feb. 19 (Xinhua) — Five soldiers were killed in an attack on a security forces check post in the South Waziristan district in northwestern Pakistan, regional security officials said Friday.

“Miscreants conducted a fire raid on Zawar Post in South Waziristan on Feb. 18 at 21:55 p.m. Five soldiers were martyred and one was injured,” security officials in South Waziristan said in a message to Xinhua and the local media.

The message said reinforcement force was sent to the check post and more information is being collected.

The outlawed Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan claimed responsibility for the attack on the check post of the paramilitary Frontier Corps (FC) in a statement sent to local media.

Located along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border, South Waziristan used to be a hotbed of militancy, but the security forces have driven terrorists away from the area in high-profile armed offensives.

However, sporadic attacks by the militants have continued in the area. Earlier this month, a clash between security forces and militants in South Waziristan killed four terrorists and four soldiers, according to Pakistani military’s media wing Inter-Services Public Relations. Enditem
