Arsenal given next manager checklist as Gunners chiefs search for Unai Emery replacement

Arsenal chiefs have been handed a new manager checklist, as the Gunners line up Carlo Ancelotti, Mikel Arteta and Freddie Ljungberg to take over at the Emirates Stadium, after Unai Emery was sacked last month.

Arsenal must find a new manager with a lot of experience, according to former Premier League manager Ian Holloway. The next Gunners boss should also be someone that’s managed in the Premier League, and that fluently speaks English, he claimed.

Arsenal have been searching for a new manager since they sacked Unai Emery at the end of November.

The Gunners’ form had taken a turn for the worse, with Emery leaving the Emirates Stadium without a win in their last seven matches in all competitions.

Arsenal should target a new manager that has experience in handling big personalities at a major club, said Holloway.

It’s also crucial that the next boss has managed in England, and they know the physical and mental demands of the Premier League.

“There’s a few people that I would put in the frame, but it’s a very sad state of affairs,” Holloway told Express Sport.

“It’s a sad demise, but it’s a magnificent club for someone to take over.

“I believe it needs to be someone with a lot of experience. One of the big ones, like an Ancelotti or a Benitez, or somebody of that ilk.

“Maybe someone that knows this country a bit better than just somebody random, who might’ve done well in Italy, who can’t really speak English. I don’t think that’ll go down too well.”

Blame for the club’s decline should be handed to the Arsenal hierarchy, claimed Holloway.

They made the wrong appointment with Emery, and should’ve changed managers a lot sooner at the end of the Arsene Wenger era.

Wenger should have been given a role within the club’s hierarchy, to help mentor a younger manager, he added.

“There’s too many mistakes being made, and heads should roll at the top of the club,” said Holloway.

“They’ve got it wrong, in my opinion. They had such a good manager [Wenger] holding the purse strings, building a training ground, designing the ground – he was that clever.

“They kept hold of him too long; should’ve moved him up. Put a younger person in who he could influence, and they haven’t got it right.”

Ancelotti has been tipped to take over as Arsenal manager, after he was sacked at Napoli.

The Italian was relieved of his duties at the Serie A club with Napoli in seventh place in the league table.

They were winless in nine matches before their 4-0 win over Genk in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Ancelotti was sacked within hours of the final whistle, and Gennaro Gattuso was given the hottest.

Other names in the frame for the Arsenal job include Mikel Arteta, Patrick Vieira, Massimiliano Allegri, Mauricio Pochettino and Paulo Sousa.
