A babysitter allegedly dumped an eight-month-old baby in a rubbish bin after attacking the child’s mother.
The tot was found ‘shivering’ inside the dumpster and was treated for burns to both hands, although it is not clear what caused the injuries.
Andiana Velez, 24, stands accused of assaulting the baby’s 21-year-old mum in New Haven, Connecticut, US, before dumping the child in the bin.
Police officers were called to the scene after the little girl, who is now in hospital receiving treatment, was reportedly found by maintenance workers at the apartment complex.
Velez was later arrested and now faces charges of risk of injury to a child, second-degree assault and reckless endangerment.
Maintenance worker Rick Chardon, who saw the baby, said: “You can tell she was freezing, freezing in that trash can.”
He added that the child looked ‘very healthy’ and it was obvious from looking at her that she had been loved and cared for before the traumatic episode.
One resident at the apartment complex spoke of her shock over the horrific incident, telling the New Haven Register: “People are actually throwing babies in the trash can?
“For this to happen, it’s crazy.”
Captain Anthony Duff said: “New Haven police and the state Department of Children and Families are continuing to investigate the cause of the child’s injuries.
“Investigators have not yet determined who is responsible for the infant’s burn injuries.”
Velez is due in court on Tuesday and is being held on £192,326 bail, the New York Post reports.
