Barcelona, Real Madrid, Man Utd and Juventus told true cost of Matthijs de Ligt transfer

MATTHIJS DE LIGT will end up costing interested parties around £80m this summer.

That’s according to Dutch football journalist Marcel van der Kraan, who insists Juventus, Barcelona, Real Madrid, Paris St-Germain and ‘a string of Premier League clubs’ are in the running to sign the Ajax centre-back.

De Ligt, 19, is hot property in European football after producing a number of commanding displays in Ajax’s run to the Champions League semi-finals.

Barcelona are the favourites to secure his signature in the summer window, but PSG are also believed to be in discussions with the Dutchman’s agent Mino Raiola.

And Van der Kraan has shed light on how much it will end up costing whichever club comes out on top.

“Real Madrid we think are also still keen [on De Ligt]if anything goes wrong with Barcelona”

Marcel van der Kraan

“Juventus have been there from the start, very keen to sign him of course and confirmed by Cristiano Ronaldo’s approach,” he told Sky Sports’ Transfer Talk podcast.

“Barcelona have already been over to Amsterdam to have talks with Ajax, to have talks with his representatives. Real Madrid we think are also still keen if anything goes wrong with Barcelona.

“Paris St-Germain, yes, very much at the forefront, very keen to open talks this week if the Barcelona deal does not go through or if they cannot sort everything out between the agent and the club.

“And then of course there are a string of Premier League clubs who are very keen to sit on the table with his agent.”

Van der Kraan’s transfer update comes as:

  • Chelsea make a transfer decision about Barcelona ace Philippe Coutinho
  • Barca encourage Man Utd to sign this midfield star
  • De Ligt is advised to snub Barca and join United for one reason

He continued: “But at this moment they fear that financially they cannot muscle out the deals which are on the table. But the door is still open for them because he’s not decided yet.

“One year ago, we thought £30m-£40m was a huge amount of money in the Netherlands for an Eredivisie player.

“At this moment, we’ve seen that Frenkie de Jong, having gone to Barcelona and having signed already for them to join in the summer for a huge amount, almost €80m [£71m] and bonuses and all sorts of extras on top, that has set a new bar in the Netherlands for Ajax directors – Marc Overmars, the sporting director, and Edwin van der Sar, the CEO of the club – they have said ‘we are good with our club. We have proved in the Champions League that we are among the best with our players and they will have to pay the same price as they do for other top clubs with their stars.’

“So we think that at this moment he will go towards £60m-£70m and it could go up to £80m for Matthijs de Ligt including bonuses and fees on top of his normal transfer fee.

“His agent Mino Raiola is already sounding out the possibilities everywhere and the transfer fee which Ajax want is more and less clear – that is around €75m [£67m].

“I think it’s the equivalent at the moment of about £65m, but there is a huge fee on top of it with payments for the agent, payments for Matthijs de Ligt.

“He has a second agent which has been with him since his boyhood time.

“So yes, Mino Raiola is doing the business as he always is and I think the club which is prepared to pay the full package, which will go up to about €90m [£80m] I think when everything’s done, needs to make clear that they are the winners because that is how it will end up.”
