Bilbao and Basque Region to host ‘Gran Depart’ of 2023 Tour de France

MADRID, March 26 (Xinhua) — The 2023 Tour de France will start on July 1st in the city of Bilbao in northern Spain, race organizers confirmed on Friday.

It will be the second time the race has begun in the Basque Region after the 1992 Tour began in San Sebastian.

Basques will be able to enjoy two full stages of the 2023 edition, with the first stage (the Gran Depart) both starting and finishing in the emblematic city of Bilbao, while the second stage will take place in the neighboring province of Alava.

The race’s third stage will also begin in the cycling mad Basque region, before crossing the border into France.

At an event celebrated outside of the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, Inigo Urkullu, the Lehendakari (leader of the Basque region) celebrated the return of the most important cycle race after his regional government’s efforts.

“Two years ago all of our institutions began to work together, we took up the challenge and made a special effort and what was a dream back then has now become reality,” he said. Enditem
