Boy, 9, badly hurt in hit-and-run as he visited shrine to brother who died on same road

A nine-year-old boy was knocked off his bike and badly injured as he visited a shrine to his brother – who died in a crash on the same road.

Rudi Till suffered a broken collar bone, broken ribs, and head injuries after a hit-and-run collision in the Castleton area of Rochdale, Greater Manchester last Monday September 21.

He was on his way back from visiting a shrine on Manchester Road where his older brother Kavana Taylor, 21, died in a horrific smash in 2018.

Rudi’s mum, Claire Taylor, said a friend who came to the youngster’s aid told her the driver got out of a black Seat Leon and was verbally abusive before leaving the scene.

Rudi was taken to hospital by ambulance and is now recovering at home.

Claire said Rudi being injured, particularly so close to the place where his older brother died, was a setback in her grieving process.

Kavana died in the early hours of April 1, 2018 – Easter Sunday – after the BMW 3 Series he was driving crashed into a Volkswagen Polo.

An inquest into his death heard he was three-and-a-half-times the drink-drive limit and had traces of cocaine in his system when he crashed at 76mph in a 30mph zone.

In the days following his death, family and friends created a shrine to Kavana close to the spot where he died, which Rudi went to visit last Monday.

Claire added that the nine-year-old is struggling with what happened and is appealing for anyone who saw the incident to go to the police with information.

Claire said: “He’s autistic, so the emotional side of it is harder to deal with than the physical side of it.

“He couldn’t get his head around it, it’s heartbreaking.

“His friend saw what happened and had gone to help him. She asked the driver to call an ambulance but he said no.

“The guy called Rudi some not very nice names and he’s just left the scene.

“I can’t believe this happened on the same road, even on the same side.”

Greater Manchester Police said: “At around 7.20pm on Monday 21 September 2020, police were called to Manchester Road, Castleton, to reports of a fail-to-stop collision.

“Emergency services attended and enquiries established that a grey Seat León had been involved in collision with a child on a bike. The car failed to stop at the scene.

“The child was treated for minor injuries at the scene.

“No arrests have been made and enquiries remain ongoing.”

Anyone with any information should contact police on 0161 856 8522 quoting incident number 2593 of 21/09/20.
