QUITO, March 28 (Xinhua) — The Ecuadoran Ministry of Health reported 1,783 new cases and 38 more deaths from COVID-19 on Sunday, bringing the total number of cases to 324,482 and the death toll to 11,872.
The ministry also reported another 21 deaths that were probably caused by the disease, bringing the total 4,866.
There has been an exponential increase in COVID-19 cases since January, which has led to the saturation of hospitals across the nation and a high demand for oxygen.
In several cities, law enforcement has been tasked with dispersing crowds to avoid the spread of the virus, which continues due to a lack of discipline among residents.
According to the ministry, 281,684 patients have recovered from the disease, while 554 people are currently hospitalized.
The province of Pichincha continues to be the epicenter of the virus, with most cases registered in the capital city of Quito, though the province of Guayas, the previous epicenter in the country, has also reported a spike in infections.
Ecuador began its national vaccination plan with priority groups and older adults on Jan. 21. Enditem
