An eight-year-old girl was brutally savaged by a pitbull as she played in the garden.

Savannah Coleman was outside her home in Miamisburg, Ohio when a friend’s family brought round their dog.

Despite the fact the dog was on a lead it immediately went for the young girl.

It grabbed Savannah’s head between its teeth.

Savannah’s mother Tierney Dumont rushed out of the family home to find her daughter covered in blood.

“I was in complete shock as I stood there and looked at my child completely covered in blood,” Tierney told Yahoo News of the July 2018 event.

“Savannah was wearing a little white T-shirt that day and I remember it being soaked in blood, and blood dripping down to her new Adidas trainers that we had bought the previous month for her birthday.”

Savannah was rushed to a children’s hospital where she spent five hours in surgery.

Medics repaired deep lacerations to her hand and head and gave her a blood transfusion.

“Savannah had nine lacerations to her head, one being nine inches (22cm) long, which is where she was completely scalped,” Tierney said.

She also had three cuts on her right ear, two lacerations to her right hand and a puncture wound through the palm of her right hand.

Two years on from the horrific attack Savannah still suffers from nerve damage in her head which causes her severe head aches.

Every six weeks she has to have nerve block injections to manage the pain.

According to Tierney her daughter no longer wants to play outside following the attack.

The dog that attacked Savannah was put down.

In the years since the mauling Tierney has been pushing for unprovoked dog-attacks to become a fifth-degree felony – punishable by up to 12 months in prison and a $2,500 (£1,940) fine in Ohio.

Currently owners of such dogs can only be fined $120 (£93).
