Harry Maguire will snub Man Utd and walk to Man City… ‘if he’s got any brains’

HARRY MAGUIRE should walk to Manchester City if he has the chance to join them over Manchester United.

That’s according to ESPN pundit Craig Burley, who believes the Leicester centre-back will sign for Pep Guardiola’s champions ‘if he’s got any brains’.

Maguire, 26, is reportedly on arch-rivals City and United’s summer wish-lists after emerging as one of the best defenders in the country in his time at the King Power.

The back-to-back Premier League kings are in need of a new centre-half following the news that captain Vincent Kompany is calling time on his 11-year stay at the Etihad this summer, while it is no secret that United are desperately in need of defensive reinforcements.

But Burley insists Maguire should ‘100 per cent’ pick the blue half of Manchester.

“Maguire will go to Man City if he’s got any brains and they want him. 100 per cent”

“Maguire will go to Man City if he’s got any brains and they want him. 100 per cent,” he told ESPN FC.

“And I think Man City do want him because Kompany has gone. Otamendi, I don’t know if he’s still there but he’s not gonna play much. John Stones struggled.

“If I was Harry Maguire and I had the choice, I would walk to Man City and play for them over Man United.

“100 per cent. Why wouldn’t you?”

Burley’s transfer claim comes amid:

  • Guardiola delivering a 14-word verdict on Eden Hazard’s move to Real Madrid
  • City and United receiving a fresh update in their battle for Joao Felix
  • The Premier League champions making Mauricio Pochettino their number-one choice to replace Guardiola

With three years to run on his current deal at Leicester and being a relatively young homegrown player, Maguire will not come cheap for either side.

Reports suggest the Foxes value their star defender at a stunning £80m, which would trump the £75m fee Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018.

Yet while admitting this price-tag on Maguire’s head shows ‘the market is nuts’, Burley thinks he is exactly what City are looking for.

“Well you’re talking about Kyle Walker who was more than half of that as a full-back,” he said.

“You’re talking £75m-plus for Virgil van Dijk who’s worth probably double that now.

“I’m not saying [Maguire’s] the best centre-half in Europe, [Kalidou] Koulibaly’s probably a better defender, no doubt about that, but how many people are prepared to play the way City play as a centre-half? Not many.

“He will come out with the ball, he’ll pass the ball, he’ll take it under pressure, he’s got a good physical presence, he’s played in a World Cup semi-final, he’s come a hell of a long way.

“It’s not his fault if they want £80m for him, it’s just the market. The market is nuts.”
