Lionel Messi has made his intentions to leave Barcelona clear with Manchester United and Manchester City linked with a blockbuster move for the 33-year-old. Express Sport has taken a look at exactly how Messi would fit into Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

The Argentina international shocked the world last night when the news broke he had handed in a transfer request at the Nou Camp.

The conversation quickly moved on to where his next desitnation could be with United, City and Paris Saint-Germain among those mentioned.

Even if Messi leaves on a free transfer his wages would be around £100million per year unless he was willing to take a pay cut.

The announcement came just 11 days following Barca’s humiliating 8-2 demolition at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

United chief Ed Woodward will no doubt be tempted by the availability of Messi.

The 33-year-old is still regarded as one of the best players in the world and has previously won six Ballon d’Or awards.

Messi would also be seen as a player who could immediately help the Red Devils bridge the gap to the likes of Liverpool and City.

The interesting question is how he would fit into the current United setup inder Solskjaer though.

If he was to play centrally it could mean Bruno Fernandes would need to adjust position.

Messi could also play from the right with Mason Greenwood likely to drop out of the side if he does complete a sensational switch.

Meanwhile, former Barcelona striker Gary Lineker would hate to see Messi force a messy exit from the club and hopes an amicable agreement can be reached.

“If Messi is to leave @FCBarcelona by activating a release clause, then I hope the club try to help, not hinder him,” Lineker wrote on Twitter.

“He’s been fiercely loyal and their greatest ever player.

“It would be terribly sad if it finished with a fight between the player and the club.”
