NEW DELHI, March 29 (Xinhua) — Security personnel gunned down at least five armed rebels referred to as “Naxals”, in India’s southwestern state of Maharashtra, a local government official confirmed on Monday.
The slain rebels included two females.
The encounter between the Naxals and the security personnel took place in the Khobramendha forest area in the state’s Gadchiroli district.
According to local media reports, the police and other security personnel had launched a combing operation on Saturday and exchanged fire with the Naxals. Three pressure cooker bombs were among the items recovered by the police after the Naxals fled.
On Monday, the security forces regrouped and ran into a group of 25 Naxals at around 7:30 a.m.(local time), added the media reports.
While five of them got killed in the encounter, others managed to flee. After the encounter ended, a cache of arms and ammunition was recovered from the spot. Enditem
