Novak Djokovic has been disqualified from the US Open – but why? Express Sport is on hand with all the details.

Novak Djokovic was the favourite to take home the men’s US Open title this year. But the Serbian’s tournament has been cut short after being disqualified during his fourth-round match against Pablo Carreno Busta.

Why has Novak Djokovic been disqulified from the US Open?

Title favourite Djokovic was sensationally defaulted from the US Open after hitting a line judge with a ball.

The top seed and 17-time grand slam champion had just dropped serve to trail Spanish opponent Carreno Busta 6-5 in the opening set of their fourth-round match on Arthur Ashe Stadium.

He hit a ball behind him in annoyance that hit a female line judge.

A lengthy discussion followed between tournament officials and Djokovic as the Serbian argued his case to no avail.

There was no question Djokovic did not intend to hit the line judge, and the ball was not hit particularly hard, but it was clear immediately that the woman was hurt, with the Serbian rushing over to check on her condition.

He pleaded his case at length before accepting his fate, collecting his rackets and walking off the court.

The decision will likely send shockwaves through the sport.

Djokovic won his 17th slam singles title in Australia and was an overwhelming favourite to make it 18 in New York having not lost a match all season.

The Grand Slam rules state: “Players shall not at any time physically abuse any official, opponent, spectator or other person within the precincts of the tournament site.

“The referee, in consultation with the Grand Slam chief of supervisors may declare a default for either a single violation of this code.”

Fans have since taken to social media to react to Djokovic’s disqualification.

One wrote on Twitter: “Djokovic felled a defenseless linesman. Intentional or not he deserved the DQ.

“Enough with it being a fluke. Enough with the excuses. Enough that it’s 2020’s fault (yes, one announcer implied that).

“What he did was reckless. His Covid exhibition was reckless, too. Good riddance.”

Another wrote: “Don’t think there is any debating Novak Djokovic’s DQ. It’s a simple red.

“Can’t imagine why it took so long to make the decision, other that officials wanting to make sure they got it right given that it’s the US Open and it’s Novak.”

A third commented: “Novak Djokovic defaulted from his match against Busta which leaves a wide open draw.”

A fourth added: “Everyone thinking Djokovic should be exempted from a default because of who he is: maybe that’s a problem!”
