OUTLANDER fans were delighted to learn Diana Gabaldon was writing a new novel. But what is the prequel book all about?
Jamie Fraser’s (played by Sam Heughan) backstory is set to be explored in a brand-new prequel series written by Diana Gabaldon. Recently in an interview with Express.co.uk, the author revealed a bit more about what readers can expect.
What is the Outlander Jamie Fraser prequel about?
Outlander fans are currently waiting for the ninth book in Gabaldon’s series to be released as well as season six of the hit adaptation.
However, to keep viewers excited about what is to come, the author has confirmed to fans she is working on a new book.
This will also be set in the world of her Outlander novels but will not focus on Jamie and Claire Fraser (Caitriona Balfe).
Instead, the new prequel novel will be all about Jamie’s childhood at Lallybroch.
Speaking to Express.co.uk exclusively earlier this year, Gabaldon gave some insight into what the new book will be about.
She said: “There is also a prequel book about Jamie Fraser’s parents Ellen and Brian and what happened to them.
“And what happened to her brothers Colum [MacKenzie] and Dougal [MacKenzie], and how they took over the clan and so forth.
“[It will] also explain how and why it is that Murtagh [Fitzgibbons] was in love with Ellen.
“And how did he become Jamie’s godfather? So that will be handled in the prequel book.”
Fans of the Outlander novels and series already know a little bit about the story of Jamie’s parents.
This includes the reveal of how Jamie’s father Brian died when he was watching his son be flogged by Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies).
As well as this, viewers will know Jamie’s mother Ellen died when she was giving birth to her fourth child.
The baby died along with her, leaving Brian to raise three children by herself.
At another point in the story, Jamie also revealed how his older brother William died of smallpox when he was a young boy.
Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) was also a key part of their early story as he was Jamie’s godfather.
Fans will remember how in season one, he confided to Claire how he was in love with Jamie’s mother when he was younger.
Therefore, he looks set to also play a big role in the prequel series which Gabaldon is in the process of writing.
There is no news yet about whether the novel will be made into a spin-off series for Starz as well.
However, the Outlander’s creator Ronald D Moore has confirmed they are looking into potential spin-offs for the show currently.
He told Collider: “Starz is interested and we’re definitely in conversations. Sony and Starz are in conversations about a spin-off series.
“We have more than one idea. We have a couple of ideas.
“And it’s still in internal conversation, so we’re not really prepared to go out and say what it is.”
