A disruptive passenger was kicked off a plane because she refused to wear a face mask – with the entire plane clapping and cheering as she made her way off the aircraft.

The woman was booted off the American Airlines flight travelling from Ohio to North Carolina on July 19.

Video footage taken by passenger Jordan Slade and shared on social media shows the moment the woman made her way off the plane.

After the woman picked up her three bags and started to exit the aircraft, other passengers began to cheer and clap.

The woman angrily turned around and shouted: “You can clap all you want.”

A passenger responded by saying: “Just leave. We have flights to get. Jesus.”

All adult passengers travelling on American Airlines flights are required to wear a face covering due to the coronavirus pandmic.

Ms Slade said the woman claimed she wasn’t wearing a mask because of a medical condition.

The witness told the Daily Mail: “She was argumentative from the gate.

“She demanded to be boarded first and was causing an obvious scene. Once boarded she was making phone calls and arguing with the attendant when asked to put her phone away.”

Ms Slade added: “She also refused to wear a mask putting others on the flight at risk… Another passenger even got up to confront her about her behavior with no mask.”

A number of passengers reportedly spoke to flight attendants on the plane to voice concerns that they may miss their connecting flights.

The incident took up so much time that after the woman was kicked off the flight the plane had to go back to the airport to refuel.

Ms Slade uploaded the video of passengers clapping and cheering the woman, branded a ‘Karen’, off the flight to Tik Tok, where it has been watched hundreds of thousands of times.

Currently, more than 400,000 people have liked the video.

“Clapping was 100% necessary,” one person commented.

Another said: “The person beside her was literally wearing a mask and a face shield. If you can’t wear a mask on the plane then just drive wherever you need to go.”

The video was also shared on Twitter, where a number of users were quick to slam the woman.

One said: “Why the hell would someone pay for a flight and then forfeit their seat because they’re too stubborn to wear a mask? Why bother buying a ticket? How long was this flight? Surely it couldn’t be more than a few hours? Crazy.”

Another added: “FANTASTIC! She had a choice – wear the mask or get off the plane – she made her choice to be selfish and self centered and not wear a mask for the safety of others on the plane – good riddance!”

From July 29, American Airlines will require all customers over the age of two to wear face coverings on board planes and at airports.

The company said passengers must keep their masks on from the time they enter their departure airport to the time they exit their arrival airport, except for while eating or drinking.

“According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention one of the best ways we can slow the spread of Covid-19 is to wear a face covering,” said Alison Taylor, chief customer officer of American Airlines.

“Customers and team members have been clear that they feel more safe when everyone is wearing a face covering. In light of this important feedback, we are expanding and enhancing our requirements on board and at airports.”

In a statement American Airlines added: “Those unwilling to comply with this face covering requirement at any time during their journey with American [Airlines] may be barred from future travel for the duration of this face covering requirement.”
