BELGRADE, March 24 (Xinhua) — Serbia defeated Ireland 3-2 in Belgrade on Wednesday in the first qualifier for the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The visitors went ahead in the 18th minute when Alan Browne caught a long pass sent by Callum Robinson and scored with his head.
It took the home team 22 minutes to find a way to equalize but eventually did through Dusan Vlahovic after an assist by Dusan Tadic.
The two teams stayed even well into the second half when in the 70th minute Aleksandar Mitrovic scored an amazing goal by lobbing the goalkeeper from more than 20 meters, and just six minutes later scored another one with his head.
In the 86th minute, Ireland managed to reduce the gap when James Collins benefited from a mistake in the home team’s defense and scored a late consolation goal.
The match was a successful debut for the new coach of the Serbian national football team Dragan Stojkovic.
In just two days, on March 27, Serbia hosts Portugal, while Ireland awaits Luxembourg for the second round of Group A. Enditem
