ULAN BATOR, March 27 (Xinhua) — Strong winds and dust storms are hitting the eastern and southern provinces of Mongolia, the country’s meteorology and environmental monitoring agency said Saturday.
“Strong winds and dust storms are now hitting the southern provinces of Umnugovi, Dornogovi and Dundgovi, and the eastern provinces of Sukhbaatar and Khentii,” the weather monitoring agency said in a statement.
Wind speeds are reaching 18-24 meters per second in these provinces, the agency said, warning citizens, especially nomadic herders and drivers, to take extra precautions against possible disasters.
In addition, strong winds and severe snow storms are hitting the country’s northern and central provinces.
Strong winds, dust and snow storms started on Friday in western parts of the country. Many yurts, power lines and roofs were taken down by the winds and storms in Zavkhan and Govi-Altai provinces, according to the country’s National Emergency Management Agency.
The inclement weather is expected to continue in large parts of the country this weekend.
Ten people, mostly herders, have lost their lives due to heavy dust and snow storms that swept through large parts of Mongolia in mid-March. Enditem
