Tokyo stocks close higher on hopes for U.S. economic recovery, solid earnings


TOKYO, Feb. 5 (Xinhua) — Tokyo stocks closed higher Friday as improving U.S. weekly jobless claims data and solid earnings from domestic firms lifted investor sentiment.

The 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average added 437.24 points, or 1.54 percent, from Thursday to close the day at 28,779.19.

The broader Topix index of all First Section issues on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, meanwhile, gained 25.83 points, or 1.38 percent, to finish at 1,890.95.

Air transportation, farm and fishery, and land transportation issues comprised those that advanced the most by the close of play. Enditem
