How does George RR Martin write his books?

Winds of Winter has been waiting in the wings before its release on bookshelves. Well, this is what fans would hope for, however the truth is its author, George RR Martin, has still not finished it. Fans have been questioning whether he is even still writing it – but a recent blog post reveals his method behind how he puts pen to paper.

How does George RR Martin write his books?

According to a recent post on the Not A Blog website, George RR Martin revealed how he an evening of writing might pass in his working week.

Fans will know Martin owns a cabin in which he writes, far away from distractions, and has various assistants who pop in every so often to keep him on track.

However, Martin has now revealed what his method is, and how he unwinds after he writes.

He wrote: “I write most days, sometimes into the evenings.

“At night, after supper, I read, watch television, or screen movies (I used to love going to the movies, since the best place to see a film is in a theatre with an audience around you, but the pandemic has put an end to that for the nonce)…”

Clearly, his work is what takes up most of his day, but Martin also likes to unwind with fiction and movies after work, especially enjoying His Dark Materials and Blinded By the Light, a movie set to Bruce Springsteen music.

Previously, Martin has opened up on how the characters in Westeros become part of him as he writes, helping him get in the mindset of his characters.

In an earlier post, he said: “Dwelling where I am now, deep in the heart of Westeros, I find myself surrounded by my characters, the children of my mind and heart and soul.

“They are real to me, as I write them, and I struggle to make them real to my readers as well.

“All of them are flawed, from the best to the worst. They do heroic things, they do selfish things.

“Some are strong and some are weak, some smart and some stupid. The smartest may do stupid things…

“Life is like that, and art should reflect that, if it is to remain true. Ours is a world of contradiction and unintended consequences.”

In this post, he is explaining about flawed humans, and comes after he came under fire for comments made during the Hugo Awards, which he hosted virtually in August.

However, it helpfully gives an insight into his method of writing, and perhaps how being so caught up in the ins and outs of Westeros has slowed his progress.

In an even earlier post, Martin explained how he does not write, comparing his current writing style to that of his previous books.

He wrote: “It is curious how my life has evolved. I mean, once upon a time, I actually wrote my books and stories in the house where I lived, in a home office.

“But some decades ago, wanting more solitude, I bought the house across the street and made THAT my writer’s retreat.

“No longer would I write all day in my red flannel bathrobe; now I would have to dress and put on shoes and walk all the way across the street to write. But that worked for a while…

“Everyone morning I wake up and go straight to the computer, where my minion brings me coffee (I am utterly useless and incoherent without my morning coffee) and juice, and sometimes a light breakfast. Then I start to write.

“Sometimes I stay at it until dark. Other days I break off in late afternoon to answer emails or return urgent phone calls.

“My assistant brings me food and drink from time to time. When I finally break off for the day, usually around sunset, there’s dinner…”

For Martin, this is the system he uses every day, so much so that he admitted he “loses track” of the days, weeks and months.

However, fans will be hoping this works towards the book coming to fruition soon.
