2021 Film Independent Spirit Awards postponed after Oscars deferment

LOS ANGELES, June 16 (Xinhua) — The 2021 Film Independent Spirit Awards will be postponed for nearly two months to April 24, 2021, the organizers announced on Tuesday.

“The Film Independent Spirit Awards will take place on Saturday, April 24, 2021,” said Josh Welsh, president of Film Independent, the organizer of the annual awards.

“Additionally, we will recognize films that were released between January 1, 2020 and February 28, 2021, in acknowledgement of the unique challenges the world of cinema, and the world as a whole, is currently experiencing,” he in a statement.

The announcement came one day after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ decision to defer the 93rd Oscar ceremony from Feb. 28 to April 25, 2021, in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Film Independent Spirit Awards, the premier awards event for the independent film community, traditionally takes place the day before the Oscars in the U.S. coastal city of Santa Monica in California.

The 2021 edition of the awards was originally scheduled for Feb. 27, 2021.

Chinese-American film director Lulu Wang’s comedy drama “The Farewell” won the Best Picture — the biggest award of all — at the 35th Film Independent Spirit Awards held in February. Enditem
