A GANG of prisoners have escaped from a prison in South Africa and have reportedly hijacked a vehicle as police desperately try and hunt them down.
Chaotic scenes have been filmed on the streets of Malmesbury – in the country’s Western Cape – where around 50 criminals are running riot forcing school kids to cower under their desks.
Disturbing footage shows men sprinting through the streets surrounded by tear gas while booming gunshots can be heard.
There are also reports of lags hijacking a car as police chased them.
According to local media, the men were being transported to a nearby court when they were filmed running from a correctional services facility in Malmesbury.
The witness who captured the incredible prison break on camera was in his vehicle in a nearby car park.
Meanwhile, a video posted on social media shows terrified children hiding under their desks at a local school.
A police spokeswoman said the escaped men were all awaiting trial.
She said: “Police from Malmesbury and neighbouring police stations on the West Coast, together with officials from the Department of Correctional Services (DCS), have launched an extensive search for awaiting-trial prisoners who escaped from Malmesbury on Friday afternoon.
“The search party including detectives, on foot and in vehicles, has already covered much ground with the re-arrest of several escapees.
“As the search intensifies, additional support will be summoned.”
She added that an investigation has been launched to determine how the prison break happened.
According to The South African, many of the prisoners were immediately re-arrested.
