57 treated for injuries following fire on U.S. warship: navy


WASHINGTON, July 13 (Xinhua) — The U.S. Naval Surface Forces said Monday morning that 57 people have been treated for minor injuries following a fire aboard USS Bonhomme Richard at San Diego Naval Base in California.

“As of 06:30 a.m. Pacific time (1430 GMT), firefighting teams continue operations on board USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD 6), 57 personnel, 34 U.S. Navy Sailors and 23 civilians have been treated for minor injuries including heat exhaustion and smoke inhalation,” the forces tweeted.

When a fire erupted Sunday morning, 160 people were on the 255-meter amphibious assault vessel, Commander of Expeditionary Strike Group Three, Rear Adm. Philip Sobeck told a press conference Sunday night, adding that there was an internal explosion around 8:30 a.m. (1630 GMT).

Sobeck also said that the sailors are in stable conditions and the ship was undergoing maintenance. Enditem
