9 dead recorded in Portugal’s police Christmas operation


LISBON, Dec. 29 (Xinhua) — Nine people died and 32 were seriously injured in 2,103 accidents from Dec. 20 until Sunday morning under the “Christmas and New Year” operation by the National Republican Guard (GNR), Portuguese Lusa News Agency reported on Sunday.

According to data released by the GNR, 532 minor injuries were also reported since the start of the operation, which kicked off on Dec. 20 and will end on Jan. 5.

The GNR military has conducted 36,705 driver alcohol tests, 248 of which resulted in offense, the report said.

A total of 270 violations related to incorrect or non-use of seat belts and child restraint systems were detected, and 360 drivers were fined for using their mobile phones while driving.

During the operation period, The GNR mobilizes about 4,600 military personnel from the National Transit Unit and Territorial Commands daily and increased road patrol on the country’s busiest roads to prevent accidents and ensure smooth traffic.
