Adele’s new album 30 is on track to surpass Abba’s Voyage in the charts, demonstrating that the CD is far from dead.

The latest collection of heartbreak anthems is on track to break Abba’s ‘Voyage’ opening week UK sales record of 204,000 copies set in 2021.

After purchasing massive amounts of Adele’s new album, music fans demonstrated that the compact disc is far from dead.

The star’s long-awaited collection of heartbreak anthems, which debuted amid a barrage of emotional interviews about her recent divorce, is well on its way to breaking Abba’s Voyage’s 204,000-copy opening week UK sales record.

According to retailers, the first Adele album in six years sold well on vinyl and CD, despite the physical format’s precipitous decline as music fans migrated to streaming platforms like Spotify.

The CD remains a viable option for home listening and Christmas gifts for casual music buyers and high-street browsers.

Voyage’s sales were also boosted by collectors’ edition CD versions.

Adele’s label, Sony, used its clout with printers to ensure that plenty of limited-edition “clear vinyl” copies of 30 were available in stores, while other artists were forced to wait.

“While we don’t expect it to break 25’s record of 803,000 copies sold in seven days, it is likely to become the biggest first week seller in some years,” said Phil Halliday, managing director of HMV and Fopp.

“Pre-orders for both the vinyl and CD editions of the album were strong, demonstrating that physical formats remain as popular as ever with true music fans.”

A “stellar” release schedule, which includes Voyage and Ed Sheeran’s, has resulted in “increased CD sales compared to this time last year, while vinyl continues to attract younger shoppers who want to listen to albums in their entirety.”

“Record labels, including Adele’s, are now offering deluxe and limited edition versions of their new records, which fans are flocking to buy.”

Adele delayed the release of her 2015 album 25, 25, to streaming services for several months in order to maximize physical and paid download sales.

30 was released simultaneously on streaming platforms and is expected to set new records in the digital music industry.

“Easy On Me,” the first single, was the most requested song on Amazon Music, according to the company.
