Production on films and TV shows shut down in Los Angeles back in March as the Coronavirus pandemic worsened around the country. As a result, daytime soap operas like “Bold and the Beautiful” and “Young and the Restless” were unable to produce new episodes. However, that may now be changing.
The CBS daytime dramas, as well as all other shows, were unable to continue filming episodes of their shows from the end of March, and in the case of “B&B” and “Y&R,” new episodes ran out at the end of April due to a roughly 30-day lead on production schedules. In order to keep the shows on air during their time slots, each show then began airing “theme weeks,” pulling episodes from the archives instead. For “Young and the Restless,” themed episodes revolved around Katherine Chancellor (Jeanne Cooper), Victor (Eric Braeden) and Nikki’s (Melody Thomas Scott) love story, epic rivalries and villains, The Abbott and Winters families and romance. On “The Bold and the Beautiful,” the themes included Epic Weddings, Fashion showdowns, Classic Clashes, Fan-favorite episodes, and ones that honored celebrity guest stars and legacy character Brooke Logan.
However, due to a new lifting of restrictions on the Los Angeles area, both shows could resume taping as soon as Friday, June 12, meaning fans could get new episodes again soon. Los Angeles County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer announced on June 10 modifications that would permit the film and TV production sectors to reopen, provided certain requirements could be met on the sets.
This comes one week after California Governor Gavin Newsom also released guidelines that would need to be obeyed so filming could resume.
It is unclear if the shows will immediately start-up production, or how long they will be back in production before the new episodes make it to air. However, producers over at “The Bold and the Beautiful” at least have remained hopeful since May that they could get back to work by June 13. At the time, a memo was reportedly sent to the show’s cast and crew that stated they were getting ready to begin production at that time, but that nothing was set in stone since official safety protocols needed to be set by the Hollywood unions, Television City, the city of Los Angeles, and the state of California.
Episodes of “The Young and the Restless” airs weekdays at 12:30 p.m. EDT on CBS. “The Bold and the Beautiful” airs weekdays at 1:30 p.m. EDT.
