Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta wants to sign Jerome Boateng from Bayern Munich when the transfer window reopens in January.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta sees Daniele Rugani as an alternative to Jerome Boateng despite eyeing the Bayern Munich star, reports say. The Gunners are looking at bolstering their squad when the transfer window reopens in January.
Arsenal have conceded 28 Premier League goals this season and Express Sport understands Arteta is keen to sign a centre-back to improve things at the back.
Boateng is on his radar, with the Bayern Munich star likely to be available in the New Year.
The Germany international is a Bayern legend but has managed just eight appearances this season under both Niko Kovac and Hans-Dieter Flick.
Arsenal are supposedly keen to bring Boateng to the Emirates, with Arteta an admirer.
But the Gunners reportedly have Rugani as a backup.
The Italy international has struggled for game time at Juventus this season, making just three appearances since Maurizio Sarri’s arrival as manager.
JUST IN: Arsenal transfer ‘will happen’
And Arsenal, it seems, could be his next destination.
Rugani came close to making the move to north London in 2017 when Arsene Wenger still ruled the Arsenal roost.
And it appears the Gunners still hold the 25-year-old in high regard, despite him failing to shine at Juventus.
Meanwhile, speaking ahead of Arsenal’s crunch Premier League clash with Chelsea today, Arteta opened up on the Gunners’ transfer plans.
And he admitted he was hopeful of adding to his squad, saying: “We need players back from injuries, first of all, to be more solid, more compact.

“And then we might need to do one or two things if the right players become available, to help us.
“But at the moment I am more concerned with getting the maximum out of the players available to us.”
Former Arsenal winger Karen Carney, meanwhile, believes Arteta must buy players who bring mobility, energy and pace to his defence and midfield.
“Defending [is where Arteta needs to improve Arsenal],” Carney said on Amazon Prime Video.
“That was the first clean sheet the other day against Everton for I think two months.
“He’s got to go in and get the pairing of the two centre-halves right and the two centre-midfielders.
“They have been conceding far too many goals, the inconsistency of the back four, it keeps chopping and changing.
“So he’s got to get in there, he’s got to get stability.
“There’s talk that he hasn’t got much money in the window but if he has, he’s got to buy very sensibly and smart because he needs some new players.
“A bit of mobility and energy and pace is lacking in the centre of midfield and the centre-back area.”
