A baby was found dead in a plastic tub inside a cupboard just months after he was placed in the care of a violent criminal.
Scorpio Sharp was placed in the care of Ricky Tubbs after the baby’s mother Roxanne Raphael lost custody of her earlier in the year.
While Tubbs, 25, passed necessary background checks before taking the child, she did not tell the Department for Children and Families (DCF) about her housemate, a spokesperson told WFTV9.
Tanya Galvin, 41, lived in Tubbs’ Cape Canaveral, Florida home but was not screened by the services.
On the day that Scorpio died he had been left with Galvin, according to reports.
Police were alerted to the tragedy when an officer noticed three children aged between two and four walking outdoors without supervision.
They then found the door to Tubbs’ home open and Galvin asleep inside, the police have said.
Officers found Scorpio unresponsive in a plastic container when they searched the house, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
He was pronounced dead later on in hospital and an autopsy found that he had died from drowning.
The police department has said that Scorpio died while in the bath before his body was left in the bedroom.
His baby clothes were found wet on the bathroom floor.
Galvin allegedly breached her probation by moving in with Tubbs.
Investigators say she had a documented history of violence, WFTV reported.
She had previously be charged with committing grand theft auto.
The DCF claimed it had visited the property four times between February 15 and March 1, but Galvin was not there.
Both Galvin and Tubbs were arrested on Friday, three months after the baby was found dead on March 1.
Galvin has been charged with aggravated manslaughter of a child and violation of probation.
Tubbs was charged with neglect of a child with great bodily harm.
