The Champions League knockout stages are just around the corner and the draw for the last 16 will take place this morning. All four English teams in this year’s competition have made it through to the next round, but who are the Premier League sides predicted to meet?

The Champions League draw will take place today with all four competing English clubs making it through the group stages and into the pot for the last 16.

Reigning champions Liverpool finished top of a group consisting of Napoli, Red Bull Salzburg and Genk to earn a potentially favourable draw in the next round.

Manchester City also claimed first place in their group ahead of Shakhtar Donetsk, Dinamo Zagreb and Atalanta, ensuring they will face a runner-up in the knockout stages.

Tottenham suffered a humbling defeat to Bayern Munich in the previous stage and finished well behind the Bavarian giants in their group, although they are certain to avoid Bundesliga outfit – at least in the last 16.

And Chelsea squeezed through as runners-up after a narrow win over Lille, finishing behind Valencia at the expense of Ajax to book their passage.

Each group winner will face a group runner-up in the forthcoming ties, with the teams divided into two pots based on these parameters.

And no team will be able to face the side which came second in their own group, while teams also cannot face another from their own country.

That means the Premier League clubs will all avoid their domestic rivals while a host of other clashes including Barcelona vs Real Madrid are ruled out.

Express Sport have run a simulation using draw.inker.one to predict how the next round will shape up, and it’s bad news for Liverpool with a clash against Atletico Madrid on the horizon.

The European champions could also face Real Madrid, Lyon or Atalanta while an emotive meeting with Borussia Dortmund is also a possibility.

City will be hoping to avoid meeting Atletico or Real in the next round and will be happy with our simulated draw against Lyon.

Other options for Pep Guardiola’s men include Napoli and Dortmund.

Tottenham have been drawn against Barcelona in our simulation, which is arguably the worst possible fixture they could be faced with.

However, Juventus, PSG, RB Leipzig and Valencia are also in the opposite pot after Jose Mourinho’s men failed to top their group.

And Chelsea are set to match-up against French giants Paris Saint-Germain but will be delighted if they avoid Barcelona or Bayern Munich.

The other ties in our simulated draw included Real Madrid’s clash with Leipzig, Napoli facing off against Munich, Dortmund taking on Juventus and Atalanta going up against Valencia.
