COVID-19 cases in Philippines exceed 65,000 with 2,357 new cases

MANILA, July 18 (Xinhua) — The number of COVID-19 cases in the Philippines surged to 65,304 after the Department of Health (DOH) reported 2,357 new cases on Saturday.

The DOH said that the number of recoveries further rose to 22,067 after 321 more patients have survived the disease.

The death toll also increased to 1,773 after 113 more patients have succumbed to the viral disease, the DOH said.

COVID-19 cases in Metro Manila, the epicenter of the outbreak, have continued to surge in the past days, with 1,824 new cases reported on Saturday.

“There’s a lot of contributing factors (for the coronavirus spike in Metro Manila). Expanded testing capacity is a factor plus the evidence of community transmission, and mobility of the population,” Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said on Saturday. Enditem
