COVID-19 death toll rises to 14 in Maldives


MALE, July 14 (Xinhua) — A 79-year old Maldivian woman infected with COVID-19 died on Tuesday, raising the country’s total death toll from the virus to 14, the Health Protection Agency (HPA) said.

According to the HPA, the elderly patient was admitted to the HMF hospital in capital Male and passed away at 5:05 p.m. local time.

Thirty-one new COVID-19 cases, including 22 Maldivians, eight Bangladeshis and an Indian citizen, were reported on Monday, raising the country’s total cases to 2,762.

The first COVID-19 case in the Maldives was reported on March 7. A lockdown imposed on the region of Greater Male on April 15 is currently being relaxed in stages, with tourism set to resume on July 15.

According to the HPA, 2,290 patients have made full recoveries from COVID-19, while the country’s death rate stands at 0.5 percent. Enditem
