BEIJING, July 24 (Xinhua) — The 2020 Diamond League meeting in Shanghai scheduled for September 19 has been canceled, organizers confirmed on Friday.
The Shanghai Juss Sports Development Company said in a statement that all the international events they are organizing will not take place in 2020.
“Because of the international travel restrictions and the recent decision by China’s General Administration of Sport that China will not host any international sporting events in 2020 other than test events for Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, the requirements to hold these international events shall not be met,” the organizers said.
The cancelation of the Shanghai meeting came one day after British Athletics announced the cancelation of the Diamond League meeting in Gateshead – the Muller Grand Prix scheduled for September 12.
“The government measures brought in earlier this year due to COVID-19 have ultimately prevented the progress of the much-needed upgrade of the facilities at the Gateshead International Stadium,” the organizers said.
According to World Athletics, the 2020 Diamond League calendar remains provisional and subject to further changes due to the ongoing global health situation and ever-changing regulations. Currently, a total of six meetings have been canceled and there are still six competitive meetings scheduled to be staged between August and October.
Among those six remaining meetings, the last one slated for October 17 is also due to be held in China at an unconfirmed venue, though the decision of the country’s sporting authorities makes it unlikely to take place. Enditem
