A Florida woman was charged with DUI after she crashed her minivan with a 4-year-old child inside.
According to local reports, deputies responded to 425 Tuskawilla Road, near Keeth Elementary School, on Sunday (June 14) after receiving a report of a crash. The officers found a minivan that had crashed into a signboard near the school.
Witnesses told the deputies that the driver of the minivan, identified as Erin Kelley, tried to race other drivers at a very high speed near the school. She crashed into another vehicle and fled the scene. She then went on to crash into a stop sign.
The officers said the woman’s 4-year-old child was “crying hysterically” in the back seat. The child was not injured in the crash. When the deputies tried to question Kelley, they could smell alcohol on her breath. They also found two cans of cold alcoholic beverages in the minivan. The woman was uncooperative and refused to take a field sobriety test. She was first taken to a nearby hospital where she attempted to kick the officers. She was later booked into the Seminole County Jail after she was medically cleared.
She was charged with multiple offenses including DUI, hit and run, battery on an officer, resisting officers with violence and child neglect. Her bond was set at $17,000.
The incident comes a month after a Florida woman was charged after she crashed her van with a 4-year-old child inside. Deputies responded to Highway 27 after receiving a report of a single-vehicle crash. The driver of the vehicle, 37-year-old Karla Del Rosari Camejo Quiva, appeared to be impaired and the deputies could smell alcohol on her breath.
After the woman showed signs of alcohol impairment during the field sobriety test, she was taken to the Polk County Jail where a breath test showed .155 and .164 blood alcohol content. She was charged with one count each of DUI and child neglect for endangering the child. The relationship between the accused and the child was not known.
