Because of the ‘high fees,’ Amazon will no longer accept Visa credit cards issued in the UK.

After making purchases, some customers received an email from Amazon informing them of the changes.

Due to “high fees” charged for processing credit card transactions, Amazon will stop accepting payments made with Visa credit cards issued in the United Kingdom beginning in January.

People can still use Visa debit cards, Mastercard and Amex credit cards, as well as Visa credit cards issued outside of the UK, according to an email sent to customers on Wednesday.

“As of January 19, 2022, we will no longer accept Visa credit cards issued in the United Kingdom due to the high fees Visa charges for processing credit card transactions,” Amazon informed customers, urging them to update their default payment method.

After making purchases, some customers received an Amazon notification this week.

“The cost of accepting card payments remains an obstacle for businesses striving to provide the best prices for customers,” Amazon said in a statement.

“With technological advancements, these costs should be declining over time, but instead they are remaining high, if not rising.

“We regret that, as of January 19, 2022, Amazon.co.uk will no longer accept UK-issued Visa credit cards as a result of Visa’s continued high cost of payments.”

“We understand this is inconvenient, and we’re here to help you get through it so you can keep enjoying Amazon’s low prices and wide selection.”

Visa retaliated against Amazon’s move, claiming that when “consumer choice is limited, nobody wins.”

“UK shoppers can use their Visa debit and credit cards today and throughout the holiday season at Amazon UK,” a Visa spokesman told MailOnline.

“We are dismayed that Amazon has threatened to limit consumer choice in the future.

Nobody wins when the consumer’s options are limited.

“We have a long-standing relationship with Amazon, and we’re working to find a solution so our cardholders can use their preferred Visa credit cards at Amazon UK without Amazon’s restrictions starting in January 2022.”

Visa and Amazon have both responded to my request for comment.
