Fireworks in London for Guy Fawkes Night 2021: The best displays and events in the capital for Guy Fawkes Night

‘Remember, remember, November 5th, Gunpowder Treason and Plot.’

We don’t see why the treasonous use of gunpowder should be forgotten!’

Following a year of subdued Bonfire Night celebrations, many will be hoping for bigger and better celebrations in 2021.

There are numerous Guy Fawkes parties to attend across the country, but here are a few of the best to attend in London.

Every year on November 5th, Bonfire Night falls on a Friday, giving you plenty of chances to make a night of it at a large-scale display.

From the Alexandra Palace Fireworks Festival in London to the annual Lewes Bonfire Night parade, events take place all over the UK.

Organizers and attendees alike, however, will be hoping that the weather does not interfere with the event, especially after the stormy weather in the days leading up to the big night.

“Remember, remember, the fifth of November, Gunpowder Treason and Plot,” goes the traditional rhyme.

We see no reason why the treasonous use of gunpowder should be forgotten!”

The events of 1605, when a small group of Catholic plotters threatened to change the course of history, are commemorated on Bonfire Night.

The terrorists devised a plan to blow up King James I, the Prince of Wales, and the Houses of Parliament, led by charismatic religious fanatic Robert Catesby with the help of radicalized ex-soldier Guido (or Guy) Fawkes.

The plot arose from decades of religious strife that began with Henry VIII’s reign at the turn of the century, with Catholic disillusionment reaching a boiling point when James succeeded Elizabeth in 1603.

In the spring of 1604 Catesby hired Guy Fawkes to lead the plot, and in the summer the plotters began digging a mine beneath parliament.

They rented a coal cellar beneath the House of Lords early the next year and gradually moved 36 barrels of gunpowder into the chamber.

The explosion would have obliterated the parliament building, killing hundreds of ordinary Londoners as well as the gang’s intended targets and potentially plunging the country into a religious war if the plot had been successful.

The plotters were caught off guard just over a week before the State Opening of Parliament on November 5, the date set for their mission.

They have one of them.
