A man has been arrested over the horrific rape of a three-year-old girl which left her fighting for her life in hospital.
The shocking incident took place in Anapoima, central Colombia, on Sunday morning.
Colonel Javier Aya, head of the Cundinamarca Police, said they rushed to the scene following a call in the early hours of the morning.
National police officers went to the rural area of San Antonio where they found the victim lying on a footpath.
She was taken to the nearest health care centre before being transferred to a local hospital where she is recovering from serious injuries sustained in the attack.
Police began searching the area and arrested the suspect, alias ‘Tete’, whose age has not been reported, in a nearby forest.
It was not revealed why police believe he was responsible for the crime.
The suspect has been placed at the disposition of a judge and accused of raping a child under the age of 14.
According to figures on child abuse from the Legal Medicine Institute of Colombia, Cundinamarca is among the four departments with the highest figures of abuse in the country.
At least 33 boys and 151 girls having been abused in the department this year.
The investigation is ongoing.
