ATHENS, Sept. 10 (Xinhua) — Greek authorities announced on Thursday 372 confirmed novel coronavirus cases and four deaths in a 24-hour span.
It’s the largest daily spike since the first case was diagnosed in the country on Feb. 26. The previous daily record was 293 cases reported three weeks ago.
A total of 12,452 cases have been registered in the country since February, the National Public Health Organization (EODY) said.
Fatalities have reached 297, and currently 49 patients are treated in intensive care units.
The overwhelming majority of the new cases (133) were traced in the Region of Attica, where half of Greece’s population resides.
Only 21 cases were recorded in entry points to the country.
The figures come as schools are scheduled to open on Monday.
Greek officials have ruled out a full nationwide lockdown in their planning, like the one imposed in the spring to control the spread of the virus.
In recent weeks, as the number of cases has increased significantly, they have imposed restrictions on a local level in many regions. Enditem
