Indian President gives assent to bill endowing more powers to Delhi Lieutenant Governor

NEW DELHI, March 29 (Xinhua) — Indian President Ram Nath Kovind has given his assent to the bill that accords primacy to Lieutenant Governor (LG) of national capital territory Delhi over the elected government headed by the chief minister, officials said Monday.

“Yesterday President gave his assent to the Government of National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi (Amendment) Act, 2021. The Act provides that the term government referred to in any law made by the Legislative Assembly will imply Lieutenant Governor,” an official said.

Indian parliament passed the bill last week amid opposition from the opposition parties especially from the lawmakers of the ruling party in Delhi.

As per the new law, the capital city’s government will now have to seek the opinion of the LG before taking any executive action.

The government stated amendments would lead to transparency and clarity in governance in NCT of Delhi and enhance public accountability.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has opposed the bill.

Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party has already said it was planning to approach the Supreme Court against the legislation, alleging it was an “unconstitutional” attempt to make the Delhi government “administratively impotent” by a political party that has been made “electorally impotent” by the people of the national capital.
