Is the November 2021 full moon tonight? When is the “beaver moon” lunar eclipse, and how did the name “beaver moon” come about?

Is the full moon in November 2021 tonight? When is the “beaver moon” lunar eclipse, and how did it get its name?

The full moon in November occurs on Friday, November 19th, and peaks at 8.57 a.m., according to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich.

The full moon of November arrives this week, and Brits are hoping for a clear night to see it.

For millennia, the full moon has been shrouded in folklore and mystique, inspiring everything from religious festivals to horror films and bizarre end-of-the-world conspiracy theories.

It’s also led to moon names becoming popular in recent years, with this month’s full moon being dubbed the “beaver moon” by some – here’s everything you need to know.

According to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, the next full moon will be on Friday, November 19th.

However, because it peaks at 8.57 a.m., it will be most visible on Friday morning and Thursday night.

The full moon this month coincides with a lunar eclipse (also known as a “blood moon”), though only for a few minutes for those in the UK.

A penumbral eclipse will begin at 6.02 a.m. on Friday, when the moon will begin to dim, followed by a partial eclipse at 7.18 a.m.

At 7.20 a.m., this reaches its highest point above London.

However, a few minutes later, the sunrise will cut the show short, and British stargazers will miss the eclipse’s peak.

This will happen at around 9.02 a.m. in the UK, with the penumbral eclipse lasting until 12.03 p.m. in the US, making it more visible.

Although we think of a full moon every month, the lunar cycle lasts just over 29.5 days, which means there can be multiple full moons (commonly referred to as a “blue moon”).

This means that the full moon occurs a little earlier each month, with the following full lunar calendar for 2021:

According to the American Farmer’s Almanac, which has apparently been designated as the gold standard for such matters, November’s full moon has become known in some quarters as the “Beaver Moon.”

“Beavers can be seen collecting wood along the banks of rivers and streams to shore up their lodges and dams before the ice sets in,” according to the publication.

“At this time, Native American tribes and later Europeans were also present.
