JERUSALEM, June 15 (Xinhua) — Israel’s military said war jet and tanks on Monday night attacked sites in the Gaza Strip belonging to Hamas, citing an earlier rocket fire from the Palestinian enclave.

A military spokesperson said in a statement that an aircraft hit a “Hamas infrastructure used for underground activity in the southern Gaza Strip.” In addition, “IDF (Israel Defense Forces) tanks targeted Hamas military posts,” the statement read.

Earlier on Monday night, militants in Gaza fired a rocket, hitting an open field in southern Israel, without causing injuries.

Israel’s army frequently retaliates such fire with artillery or airstrikes targeting posts of Hamas, an Islamist Palestinian movement that runs Gaza.

No group immediately assumed responsibility for the fire. It was the first time Gaza militants fired a rocket towards Israel since May 6.

Local Israeli media reported that the fire came in the wake of an upcoming transfer of 50 million U.S. dollars aid from Qatar to the Gaza Strip. According to a report in Israel Today newspaper, the Israeli government has agreed to allow the transfer in return for halting incendiary helium-filled balloons from the Palestinian enclave towards southern Israel.
