JERUSALEM, Dec. 17 (Xinhua) — Israeli military aircraft struck “an armed terrorist” who was attempting to cross from the Gaza Strip into Israeli territory on Tuesday night, the army said.
The incident took place adjacent to the fence separating southern Israel from the Palestinian enclave, a military spokesperson said in a statement.
According to the spokesperson, an aircraft targeted the suspect after troops identified him approaching the fence armed with a rifle. “A hit was identified,” said the spokesperson, without elaborating on the condition of the person.
The violence came about a month after a fragile cease-fire concluded a two-day flare-up between Israel and Gaza’s Palestinian Islamic Jihad that claimed the lives of at least 34 Palestinians.
The escalation was sparked by the killing of a senior Islamic Jihad in an Israeli airstrike.
