Kate Garraway husband update: How is Derek Draper doing?

KATE GARRAWAY’S husband Derek Draper has been battling coronavirus for more than three months.

The Good Morning Britain star has bravely opened up about her husband’s life-threatening condition on a number of occasions – but her partner is thankfully now out of the coma.

The 52-year-old dad of two was taken to hospital on March 30 after contracting coronavirus.

It was not long before Derek was in intensive care and in coma.

But wife and TV presenter Kate Garraway in June that he had fought off Covid-19, yet was still battling back to health after the virus had had a huge effect on his body.

Yet, it was revealed on July 5 that he had managed to open his eyes and wake up from the coma.

Kate has said that he is still in a “minimum state of consciousness” but is now responding to doctors and nurses.

She told Hello! magazine: “We’re keeping positive and doing everything we can to bring him round. The children and I communicate with him every day on FaceTime, while a nurse holds his iPad.

“I really believe he can hear. When medical staff say: ‘Good morning, Derek,’ he sometimes opens his eyes. We and the doctors are doing everything we can so that he can start to recover.”

In a television appearance in June, the first since Derek was admitted, an emotional Kate said: “He’s still with us. He has fought the most extraordinary battle.

“But you know, the fact that he is still here and is holding on. I’m just so grateful he’s still here. And I’ve got the option of praying and hoping.

“He is very very sick. And as time goes on, it’s a virus, it’s a little bit like a computer virus, there seems to be a flicker of hope and then other things emerge and he’s fighting that.

“It’s affected him from the top of his head to the tips of his toes.”

Kate added: “He’s now covid free, the fight of the virus has been won.

“But it’s wreaked extradorinary damage on his body and we don’t know if he can recover from that.

“It is an absolute miracle that he’s still here. I wish for some one, if I could just have one more.”

Despite being covid free, the GMB presenter revealed that her husband is now diabetic, due to his ordeal.

Kate said: “MRI showed that he has damage everywhere, holes in his heart, his liver is impacted, and his pancreas . . . well, he’s now very, very diabetic which he wasn’t before.”

Appearing from her home in North London, an emotional Kate recalled her final words to Derek before doctors put him in an induced coma.

She said: “He couldn’t really speak to me because of the mask, but he was begging me, ‘I feel like I’m suffocating, please let them put me in a coma’, because there was a debate about that.

“But I said ‘no we’ve got to wait’ because if his lungs can handle it that’s better.

“Then on the Sunday morning they rang me up and said we’re going to be putting him in a coma, and he just said to me ‘I love you, I am sorry I have to leave you’, and I said ‘it’s only for three or four days and you’re going to fine this is good, this is good. This is what you wanted, to rest.'”

Kate went on: “He said to me ‘you have saved my life, I don’t just mean now I mean everything. Being married to you and the children.’

“And I said, ‘I love you I love you’ and then he was gone and that was it. He was under.”

The GMB presenter also shared the last words Derek said to their two kids Darcy and Bill before he was taken away in the ambulance.

She revealed: “Derek told them ‘you’re the best children anyone could ask for, be good for mum, look after her’ and that was it. He went straight to intensive care.”

Kate and her family haven’t been able to visit Derek due to NHS guidelines, but staff have held a phone up so that she can talk to him and play music over FaceTime.

Many stars such as Piers Morgan and Ben Shephard, who she hosts Good Morning Britain with, have sent their best wishes to the star and her husband.

Piers tweeted: “This breaks my heart. Few happier, more positive people than @kategarraway. Or a more loyal, decent friend & colleague.

“So many families like hers going through so much unimaginable anguish in this crisis. Sending all my love to Kate & continuing to root for Derek.”

She’s thanked everyone for their ongoing support and wished other family’s going through similar struggles her best wishes.
