Landslides kill 11, injure 3 in Indonesia’s North Kalimantan

Eleven people were killed and three others wounded after landslides struck dozens of houses in North Kalimantan province in the central part of Indonesia early Monday with a risk assessment underway, an official and a rescuer said.

Rescuers have retrieved all the bodies and rescued three other injured residents from the province’s Tarakan city, spokesman of the National Search and Rescue Office Jusuf Latief said.

“The death toll rises to 11 with three others surviving, still, they sustain injuries,” Latief told Xinhua.

Soldiers, policemen, disaster agency personnel and volunteers have also taken part in the search and rescue mission, according to him.

Heavy downpours triggered the landslides which destroyed about 35 houses in the city, forcing the survivors to flee homes and take shelters to their relatives’ or neighbors’ houses, Yohanes Budi, a rescuer at the scene said.

“So far, no missing person is reported and this operation has ended. However, we still monitor the situation,” he told Xinhua by phone from the city.

Indonesia has been frequently hit by landslides, floods and flash floods during heavy rains.

The country’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency has warned of extreme weather, as Indonesia is in the transition from the dry season to the wet season.
