Liverpool are set to increase Anfield’s capacity to 61,000 by redeveloping the Anfield Road End stand which could bring a wealth of new opportunities to the area

Liverpool’s new look Anfield stadium could host NFL matches as well as showcasing GAA after they complete a huge extension on the Anfield Road end.

Reds bosses are planning to increase their capacity to 61,000 from the current 54,000 under the guidance of owners Fenway Sports Group.

And the new changes which could come into effect as soon as 2022, Anfield could host a number of sporting and entertainment events, according to Forbes.

The most eye catching new addition would be putting on NFL games, with American football taking the UK by storm after events at Wembley Stadium and the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

The heavy Irish influence in Liverpool could also see Gaelic football matches take place at Anfield, despite previous comments that there were no plans to take games to England.

Liverpool are looking to increase their capacity by copying the same recent redevelopments on the Main Stand which added an extra 8500 seats in 2016 to the Anfield Road end.

That stand currently holds just over 9000 supporters, which makes it the smallest of Anfield’s stands.

Following feedback from residents in the local area, plans have now been drawn up with alterations based on feedback received from the first consultation.

And Liverpool’s Chief Operating Officer Andy Hughes has thanked residents for their comments and allowing the development to go ahead.

He said: “We’ve actually shrunk down the ground floor of the building a small amount but it allows just enough room that we can divert the road around the back of the stadium without encroaching into Stanley Park.

“These updated plans reflect that we have listened and we thank all of those people who took the time to share their views.

“The feedback of our local residents has been essential to the planning process of this proposed expansion.

“We have been very clear from the start that we will only proceed with this project if we have their co-operation, we have a financial model which offers economic stability and we can navigate the complex planning landscape.”
