JERUSALEM, April 4 (Xinhua) — Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv lost at home to French champions Asvel Lyon-Villeurbanne 67-74 in a postponed 30th round game of the Euroleague on Sunday evening.
The French visitors achieved their 13th victory of the campaign to date from 33 games, while Maccabi remains with 13 wins from 32 games.
The rescheduled game was played at the Menorah Mivtachim Arena in Tel Aviv in front of 3,000 fans, the maximum allowed in large arenas in Israel due to the coronavirus pandemic.
It was postponed from March 18 due to French legislation imposing quarantine measures on Asvel after traveling outside the European Union.
Scottie Wilbekin and Chris Jones brought Maccabi to a 22-12 lead, just before the first quarter ended 22-14.
The French brought it back in the second quarter. Charles Kahudi put them up 33-32, and a three-pointer by Guerschon Yabusele extended the lead to 36-32, on the way to a 37-34 lead at halftime.
Three-pointers by Antoine Diot and Yabusele made it 53-46 in the 27th minute, and the third quarter ended 57-48.
The margin had been extended to 11, but Maccabi gradually cut the gap to 67-70 with 43 seconds left on the clock. A dunk by Moustapha Fall with 21 seconds to the buzzer secured the French victory.
Norris Cole scored a team-high 17 points for the visitors. Yabusele added nine points and 10 rebounds.
Dragan Bender led Maccabi scorers with 15 points, with Wilbekin and Tyler Dorsey adding 14 each.
Maccabi’s next game is at home against Khimki Moscow on Tuesday, while Lyon-Villeurbanne will face CSKA Moscow in Russia on Thursday. Enditem
