A man originally charged with more than 60 counts of child sex abuse including the rape of a 14-year-old has walked free from court after agreeing to a plea deal.

William Edward Miller Jr was given a one-year suspended sentence after pleading guilty to just one court of child sex abuse.

The 51-year-old was originally arrested in February 2019 after a 14-year-old girl accused him of raping her and allowing an 11-year-old boy to rape her as well.

Officers then allegedly found images of child pornography and bestiality on his phone and laptop.

State prosecutors in Montana, USA, filed a total of 64 counts of sexual abuse of children against Miller, the Great Falls Tribune reports.

In a plea deal, Miller pleaded guilty to one count of felony sexual abuse of children and misdemeanor unsworn falsification to authorities.

He was given a six month sentence for the misdemeanor, but his time served – 384 days – was taken into account.

For the felony he was sentenced to a suspended jail sentence of one year and ordered to complete sex offender treatment in the community.

On Miller’s sentence, Judge Best said that she could only charge the man for the offences that could be proven, not all of the initial accusations.

“I think it’s really easy and it’s easy for courts, from the bench, to use these offences as an opportunity to grandstand and to make statements for the newspaper and TV,” she said.

“They’re very, very loaded charges. They’re very difficult charges to defend against.”

Addressing the judge, Miller said: “All this happened to me, my wife, our kid has just been a tragic thing.

“It’s destroyed our lives, and we’re suffering. I’ve served time in jail for stuff that I didn’t even do.”
