Manchester City are expected to have Ederson available following illness but remain without four key players when they face Arsenal at the Emirates tonight (8pm).

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola will hope to have Ederson back from illness against Arsenal this evening but is still without four key first-team stars for the trip the the Emirates. The reigning Premier League champions are 17 points behind table-toppers Liverpool and require a win to keep their slim title hopes alive.

But John Stones and Sergio Aguero have both been ruled out against the Gunners, joining long-term absentees Aymeric Laporte and Leroy Sane on the treatment table.

When asked about Stones’ fitness at his Friday press conference, Guardiola replied: “He’s injured, I don’t know when he’s back.

“Sergio is out as well, he’s still not training.”

Both players have missed City’s past five matches due to hamstring and muscle injuries respectively.

Guardiola is also waiting on the fitness of veteran midfielder David Silva after picking up a knock in the derby defeat to Manchester United.

The 33-year-old missed the midweek win over Dinamo Zagreb and it remains to be seen whether he will feature against Arsenal, having not trained this week.

“He’s not fit now, but maybe tomorrow he will train and we’ll see,” Guardiola said on Friday.

“He had a kick on his leg, it’s not painful.”

If Silva is not passed fit, it could hand Phil Foden a rare opportunity to start in the Premier League after excelling on Wednesday.

However, Guardiola was keen to stress he has other central midfield options in addition to the academy graduate.

“He [Foden] could be ready, Gundo [Ilkay Gundogan] can play there and Kevin [De Bruyne] didn’t play in Zagreb, Bernardo [Silva can play there too,” said Guardiola.

Gundogan and De Bruyne look most likely to join Rodri in the midfield trio while Bernardo could start as part of the three-man attack after playing on the left-week against Zagreb.

Riyad Mahrez would therefore be the unlucky player to drop to the bench when Raheem Sterling returns while Gabriel Jesus is guaranteed to start after his hat-trick last time out.

Benjamin Mendy faces competition from Angelino and Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back, with the latter having made his first appearance after surgery against Zagreb.

Fernandinho will come in for Eric Garcia at centre-back while Nicolas Otamendi should retain his starting berth with Stones unavailable.

Kyle Walker is expected to come in for Joao Cancelo at right-back while Claudio Bravo will drop out if Ederson is passed fit following illness.

The Chilean stopper played in Croatia with Ederson initially named on the bench, although the first-choice goalkeeper subsequently dropped out of the matchday squad with veteran goalkeeper Scott Carson stepping up.

As for Arsenal, the Gunners have a number of injury concerns with Granit Xhaka, Dani Ceballos (hamstring), Hector Bellerin (hamstring), Rob Holding (knee) and Kieran Tierney (shoulder) all on the treatment table.

However, interim boss Freddie Ljungberg should welcome Nicolas Pepe back after a bruised knee kept him out against Standard Liege on Thursday.

Arsenal head into the match on the back of a disappointing 2-2 draw with Liege, and the win over West Ham last Monday was the Gunners’ only victory in their last 11 matches across all competitions but City have just one Premier League win in their last three.
