OUTLANDER will be returning in the New Year for its 5th season. But will the Frasers suffer at the hand of more difficult challenges in the next series?
Outlander season four finished in January but the show will return for its next season in February 2020. The Frasers have already been through plenty of struggles but could even harder times be ahead for the family? One of the show’s stars teases a “tougher” series.
Will the Frasers suffer in Outlander season 5?
From Jamie (played by Sam Heughan) and Brianna (Sophie Skelton) being raped to Claire (Caitriona Balfe) giving birth to a stillborn baby, the Frasers have not had it easy over the past four seasons.
Add to the list Claire being forced into having sex with a monarch in order to free her estranged husband from jail, and it’s hard to imagine things becoming bleaker for the family.
But it doesn’t seem like it is going to get any easier for the Frasers.
Actor Heughan has teased season five will show them suffering more than what they have done so far.
Outlander season 5: Claire Fraser star discusses changes from the book
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly at New York Comic-Con earlier this year, he said: “I think everyone gets a bit of a doing this series.
“It’s a tough season for everyone and certainly the family is being torn apart by various exterior forces.”
In the season four finale, fans were left with a cliffhanger as Governor Tryon (Tim Downie) sent Jamie an order to kill his godfather Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix).
So even before season five begins, we know there will be conflict within the family.
In a statement, executive producer Matthew B Roberts shared one of the problems the Frasers will be faced with.
He said: “In season four, Jamie and Claire’s decision to remain in the New World changes the course of their life together.
“After being struck by the beauty of the North Carolina wilderness – untamed and uncultivated – they choose to call it home: Fraser’s Ridge.
“However, what is a ‘dream’ for some is a ‘nightmare’ for others.
“Being at the centre of the birth of America is often a bloody and violent and heartbreaking matter.
“Now, in season five, Jamie and Claire’s duty is not only to their loved ones but to the community of settlers forming part of the ever-increasing Clan Fraser.”

We will see the family caught up in the American Revolution with Jamie fighting alongside the British.
Previously, he fought against them in Scotland but things have since changed.
Talking to Parade, Heughan said: “He’s actually on the opposite side of the side where his allegiance really is and his loyalty lies, but he knows he needs to do it.
“He needs to do it for his family and for his tenants.
“He has to secure this land and make it a safe place for them, so he goes in league with the British.”
The fifth season will follow the story of author Diana Gabaldon’s fifth book The Fiery Cross.
The showmakers don’t stick to every storyline in the novels however, they are used as a rough guide.
But we’ll have to wait and see to find out which struggles the Frasers will be faced with next.
