Palestine records 545 new COVID-19 cases, 12,427 in total

RAMALLAH, July 24 (Xinhua) — Palestine recorded on Friday 545 new COVID-19 cases in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, raising the total number of infections to 12,427, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said.

The ministry said in a statement that the death toll from the virus in Palestine reached 73 and the total recoveries rose to 3,112 with 9,242 receiving medical care.

On Thursday, the Palestinian government put all the West Bank districts under a lockdown throughout the weekend to prevent the spread of the deadly virus, WAFA news agency reported.

“The government’s decision to impose a weekend lockdown from 8:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. aims to prevent all forms of social gatherings and visits of people,” said Ghassan Nimer, spokesman of the interior ministry in the West Bank.

The lockdown excluded bakeries and pharmacies and the government will relax it on Sunday morning.

Nimer added that following the rapid increase of infections, “the lockdown will enable the health ministry and preventive medical teams to record all the suspected cases and new infections all over the West Bank.” Enditem
