‘People with mental illness are functioning valuable members of society,’ writes Kayleigh Llewellyn, author of In My Skin.

Writer Kayleigh Llewellyn talks to Emily Baker about series two and the importance of being honest about the darker side of mental health with Gabrielle Creevy, the star of the BBC Three series.

Being a teenager is difficult enough – there are exams, social status, romance, friends, puberty, and, occasionally, the future to consider – but being a teenager and caring for a mother with bipolar disorder is nearly impossible.

Bethan, the young Welsh woman at the center of BBC Three comedy-drama In My Skin, is in this situation.

It is a poignant, visceral, and emotional meditation on how mental illness affects not only those who suffer from it, but also those who love them. It is based on the writer Kayleigh Llewellyn’s own childhood.

The first season, which aired in 2018, was a critical success, earning the cast and creators four Welsh Baftas and two more nominations.

It peeled back the “everything’s fine” façade Bethan puts on to reveal the exhausting, fraught, panicked experience of trying to keep her mother, Trina (Jo Hartley, stunning), safe and sane as best she can over the course of six addictive episodes.

The second season premiered last week to rave reviews for its “gritty and gorgeous” (as one critic put it) take on the coming-of-age story.

“Sometimes we see things on TV that aren’t the way things work in real life,” Gabrielle Creevy, who plays Bethan with mesmeric dexterity, says.

“It was the first time I saw a glimpse of myself on the page.”

People were probably taken aback by how honest and unapologetic it was.”

For the actress, taking on the responsibility of telling a true, often painful story has been an interesting challenge.

“You want to honor Kayleigh’s experience and do the story justice,” she says.

“It’s been difficult for me to comprehend that this also happened to someone I know.”

I’m from Wales, but these stories aren’t told until someone puts them in front of you.

It was a true eye-opener.”

“It’s a reality in so many people’s lives,” Llewellyn continues, “but it’s rarely depicted on screen.”

“And when it is, it’s usually in a voyeuristic manner, similar to poverty porn.”

This has a specific origin.
