Willian Borges da Silva recently signed a short-term deal that would keep him at Stamford Bridge until the end of the domestic season. But beyond that, little is known. However, the Brazilian may have dropped a hint as to what he plans to do next.
Willian hinted that he could stay at Stamford Bridge, probably realizing that the team is showing promise under the watch of Frank Lampard. Hence, it may all depend on how well the Blues finish the current season.
The 31-year-old winger is focused on the club’s remaining games as Arsenal tries to maintain its hold as one of the top four teams. At the rate he is playing, Chelsea is looking good. Willian scored a crucial penalty against Manchester City that assured the Blues of three important points.
“I want to finish the season well if I go, or maybe I can stay,” Willian said via the team’s official website.
If Willian does stay, it would be a big blow to the plans of Manchester United — ironically the team giving chase to them in the Premier League table. The Blues are just two points ahead of the Red Devils as of this writing.
United has already reportedly held talks with the Brazilian about a potential transfer. Other teams interested in Willian include Arsenal and Tottenham. Much of this was covered in a previous report.
As for Chelsea, Lampard cautioned that it is too early to celebrate. The win against City was something, but their fate this season will not be determined by that game. He admitted that it is a confidence-booster but consistent play remains the key to the Blues’ success.
“I’m not getting carried away. We can get better. We can be better on the ball,” Lampard said.
Willian’s statement could be considered good or bad. It remains that there is nothing official as far as his future is concerned. The fact remains that he is seeking a long-term deal. The Brazilian wants a three-year deal, but Chelsea was only able to commit to a two-year term.
Also, this was before the COVID-19 pandemic. With things changing due to the coronavirus, it will be interesting to see if Willian and Chelsea will also change their stance. Looking at teams interested in Willian, the chances of him getting a longer deal is not looking great — possibly another factor why the Brazilian is now considering staying longer at Emirates Stadium.
